Environmental Site Investigation/Remediation

RMCI Provides the Following Site Investigation/Remediation Services:

  • Site Investigation
  • Fate and Transport Modeling
  • Risk Assessment
  • Remediation Oversight

RMCI personnel are currently providing technical support to active and inactive military reservations under a Total Environmental Restoration Contract (TERC) for the Department of Defense. The military reservations include multiple solid waste management units with waste streams ranging from explosive compounds and special munitions to chlorinated solvents and fuels. These waste streams are subject to regulation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

RMCI has provided the following services related to management of these regulated wastes under the TERC.

Site Investigation: RMCI integrated data from six different field investigations related to a chlorinated solvent plume approximately 5000 feet in length. The potential for natural attenuation with respect to confluent plumes of petroleum hydrocarbons was evaluated. Plume boundaries were identified and an evaluation of the aquifer geochemistry facilitated programmatic planning for corrective measures.

Fate and Transport Modeling: RMCI evaluated the data acquisition requirements to support mathematical modeling of volatization of trichloroethylene from surface water bodies located downgradient of a landfill. RMCI collected the field data and modeled volatization rates that were demonstrative of effective natural attenuation.

Risk Assessment: RMCI is responsible for preparation of No Further Action (NFA) guidance documents that specify the methodologies and procedures for identifying sites that require no further environmental investigation. Development of the NFA process included negotiations with regulatory agencies over exposure factors, toxicity values, and risk assessment methodology. The guidance documents provide a programmatic framework that direct acquisition of environmental data, evaluation of the information collected, and selection of the appropriate course of action (No Further Action, Interim Remedial Measure, Corrective Measures, etc.)

Remediation Oversight: RMCI was responsible for overseeing excavation of a sanitary landfill that on occasion had been used for disposal of hazardous or munitions waste. RMCI staff inspected each bucket of excavated material and directed suspect material to be segregated for further assessment prior to disposal.
